We are now closed for essential maintenance of us, the team and our little place. We reopen 9am Thursday 20th January.


We are delighted to welcome you to our little cafe.  We have a wonderful covered external seating area for those rainy or chilly days - it is the north after all!  

Indoor seating is available and we now have a beautiful new coffee bar in our little shop.  This was made by Jonathan using recycled material from around the farm.  It's a lovely spot to enjoy your coffee sitting on a tractor stool looking across the fields.

Our menu  includes:

Sausage or bacon baps (and add mushrooms, onions and/or an egg)

Double pork cheese burgers

(all pork rare breed, raised here and fed with whey from the cheesemaking)

Cheese toasties (cheese, cheese and tomato or cheese and onion) with specials on the board

Cheese platters featuring along with our cheese of course, local chutney, butter and award winning Peters Yard crispbreads.

A range of local cakes including biscoff cheesecake

Cheese or fruit scones

Coffee - cappuccino, latte, americano, flat white. Decaff soya and semi skimmed available

A wide range of teas.

We also offer a wide range of locally brewed real ales, peroni lager, Henry Weston Cider and wine by the glass or bottle (french or local -Tyneside)


National Cheese Lovers Day - We couldn't reopen on Thursday January 20th on National Cheese Lovers Day without doing a few cheesy things so here's what we've got lined up for you:

We're going to have a couple of extra cheese toasties on the specials board.

A stinky cheese board special.

Plus an opportunity to do a little cheese tastings with samples being available throughout the day.

Valentines Night  - inspired by our produce and Lady and the Tramp we have decided for the first time ever to open and offer a Valentines night menu.  Booking essential.

Mother's Day - Treat your mum to one of our award winning cheeseboards and a glass of prosecco, one of our own reared on the farm sausage baps and a cup of locally roasted coffee, or maybe a little something sweet from our locally made cake selection.

Whatever you choose the real treat for her is time with you.

Booking is highly recommended and we are offering a choice of two seatings - 12:00 or 2pm

You can order our cheese gift boxes with a range of our award winning cheeses for those special occasions, to treat someone or to treat yourself at home .  Order in the shop or for online orders click HERE .  If you don't see what you need email with your contact details and we will call to discuss your budget and requirements as soon as we are able.

You will find fresh fruit and vegetables, condiments, local bread, a range of fine foods, treats, local dairy products, local puddings, deli pots and of course, our award winning cheeses.

We also have a fabulous range of local delicious cakes and sell individual tubs of Archers ice-cream!

We aim to stock local artisan products where possible and often use those products in our cafe. Our range of stock is limited during the winter.

Our family run business uses cows milk from the family's dairy farm in Teesdale.  

It's been in the family for four generations so we know the milk is good.

Who Are We?

Teesdale Cheesemakers was formally Leaside Cheesemakers, founded by Brian and Esme Dedman in 2012.  

We are a husband and wife team Allison and Jonathan Raper, who took over the business in January 2016.

We use milk from the family farm to make our cheeses.

In January 2019 we moved to new premises and our café and small shop Cheesedale opened on November 15th 2019. 

Cheesedale is a cheese-centric cafe and shop where the menu revolves around the cheese we make on the premises.  You can take a peek into the dairy and see where the cheese is made, meet our rare breed pigs who are fed on the whey from the cheesemaking and enjoy a great cheese board and cup of coffee in the cafe.  

Our menu changes in line with our produce on the farm but we always have our award winning cheeses.

Our Products

We make eight soft cheeses: 

Teesdale Blue - a mild creamy Blue (cow's milk)

White Hilton - a complex creamy white cheese that changes as you chew it

Teesdale Goat - a mild mellow goat with our distinct rind to finish it off

Barney Brie - a robust farmhouse brie

Doris - a dales style cheese, crumbly in the middle with a soft edging

Allison's Garlic Special - inspired by a maltese recipe and a nod to Allison's maltese roots.

Nanny Blue - a blue goat cheese with a mild rocquefort flavour

Ronnie - using a similar recipe to Doris but cut, waxed and matured for a tangier more acidic flavour 

Durham Blue - our newest addition to the range and only available here at the farm.  A red blue cheese that is creamy with a rich blue taste with an acidic twang that rounds the flavour off nicely.

& our flavoured Teesdale Dessert Cheeses: Velvet, designed to pimp up your pud or have as a sweet treat!

We also sell organic kefir

How to get your hands on our cheese

We sell at a limited number of food festivals see  'Events', and we can arrange local delivery for larger orders. 

We also supply a number of local outlets who are listed on this site under 'Where to Buy'.   You can find the restaurants that use our cheeses on their menus there too.  

Finally you can buy our cheese directly from us at our licensed Cheesedale cafe & shop or we can arrange a postal delivery. Just drop us an email for details.
